Sports betting in New York is now legal, but you can’t bet on these teams … yet

- Online sports betting will go live in New York early next year
- Bets on certain teams will not be permitted within New York State limits
- Which? Here’s a hint: they’re not getting paid
Sports betting in New York is already underway in retail stores across the state, and online sports betting will follow in early 2022.
Two of the largest betting markets in the United States are college football and college basketball. In some states, residents can bet on their local college teams (see Arizona, Colorado, and Pennsylvania) the same way they would bet on non-state teams.
In others, such as New Jersey, residents are prohibited from betting on Rutgers, Princeton, and Seton Hall.
Sports betting regulations in New York dictate that the Empire State will follow the lead of its neighbor to the west, which means New Yorkers not be able to bet on colleges in New York in any sport.
New York State is home to three FBS college football teams and 21 Division I college basketball teams.

Why are university teams excluded from betting?
In New Jersey, the answer is something akin to “integrity.” As NJ101.5’s Dino Flammia wrote, âSchools and officials fear that college players may be influenced to manipulate the outcome of a match or be forced to share private information regarding, for example, the team. The same risk, others say, remains with any illegal betting. “
The NCAA itself (the governing body of college sports) has made its organizational feelings about sports betting known. “The NCAA opposes all forms of legal and illegal sports betting, which could undermine the integrity of athletic competitions and compromise the well-being of student-athletes and the inter-varsity athletics community,” reads on in an official statement posted on NCAA.org.
The NCAA is also pushing for widespread federal regulations on sports betting, presumably regulations that limit betting on college sports.

What about college football and college basketball championship futures?
Bets on future March Madness and College Football playoffs will be no different than single game bets when it comes to New York Schools betting. New Yorkers will not be able to bet on New York schools to win college basketball or college football. national championships.
How does that work in practice, since the New York teams could win these events?
The pages of these betting markets on sites like FanDuel New York and DraftKings New York will say at the top âWinner without New York Schoolsâ or something along those lines. In the event that a New York school Is it that win any of these titles, the sports betting rules will determine what happens to betting on that event.
It is likely that bets will be refunded, but it is also possible that bets on the finalist will be classified as winners (and all others classified as losers).
New customers are always welcome to discuss issues like this with the customer service representatives of each bookmaker.
Will the situation ever change?
“Never”? Probably yes. But it is far too early to say if it will be in our lifetime.
Sports betting is still new today and changes to the current legal framework are the furthest thing on everyone’s mind.
New Yorkers wishing to bet on New York colleges will have to get used to traveling to New Jersey or Connecticut for the time being.
